special patrol – self-titled

the first song sounds too serious and grand for a first song on anything. the up and down of myles’ coarse yet melodic voice, and the minor chords, convey a sense of earnestness that is tough to shake for the rest of the ep.

it’s not that the style is unprecedented. i get a little bit of less humourous lucero, but it’s not quite even there. i think there are also some nudges against the likes of coldplay. closer to home, i hear some carus thompson in it.

i really want to love special patrol. in spite of those diverse influences, i delight in the adelaideness of it – the accent, the sounds, the images. in different permutations, they still play venues like the wheaty and grace emily.

my beloved home town. is that enough?

also, hee hee…
