yeah yeah yeahs – self-titled

this is some of their earliest material; in fact, their first release. there are grotty elements – like second song on this ep, mystery girl and the third one; weird beats and very lo-fi noise/screaming; art star.

i recognise the unique qualities of karen o’s voice, but in hindsight the more grating of their music really, well, grates. and maybe that’s the punk ethic. no wonder i’m not a punk.

in the same token, their future quality and sheer energy is embodied in miles away. it still lacks a bit of genuine depth, and makes obvious the influences on their style. but for a song from 2001, in spite of looking back, it set its own scene with only a hint of self-consciousness.

i’ll leave the rest of my thoughts on the yeah yeah yeahs to the main releases, and why i went there. it’s not as not obvious as i once thought.
